I didn't recognize the Belgian team again after remembering some of the fantastic football they played two years ago in the European Championships. Then, I thought they were the best team in the competition – now even Saudi Arabia plays better! De Breuyne is but a shadow on the pitch, E. Hazard is non- existent, a passenger like Craig said. They should have lost 0:4 to Canada, who played wonderful football – but were damned lucky to win. Okay, first match, I thought – look at Germany – but this match against Morocco? Belgium are going to lose against Croatia and then go home early- and deserved at that.

The Belgian media and public have no clue either why Martinez is selecting Hazard. We don't understand why Trossard is benched. We don't understand why Tresor, who has a formidable season in the domestic league, isn't even selected. We can only observe that Martinez is clinging to his old team and only brings in younger players when he has no other choice. The next gen doesn't have the calibre of the golden one, but they do have energy and physicality. We may not win the world cup with them but we'd do better than this.
