FC Utrecht
Full name: Football Club Utrecht
Nicknames: Utreg, Cupfighters
Founded: 1 July 1970
The club was formed in 1970 as a merger between local clubs VV DOS, USV Elinkwijk and Velox. Since then, the club has won three national cup tournaments: in 1985, 2003 and 2004, also winning the Johan Cruyff Shield in 2004 as the first club outside the traditional Dutch Big Three. Utrecht is also the only club outside the Big Three which has never suffered relegation from the top-flight Eredivisie.
The stadium reopened in 1982 after an extensive facelift. At the time it was one of the most modern stadiums in the world, especially due to the moat around the pitch. After twenty years FC Utrecht felt the need for expansion and renewal. The main stand was moved to the North side and opened for the start of the 2001–2002 season.
The old main stand was rebuilt after that and a year later FC Utrecht had two new stands along the sides of the pitch. Last season, the goal stands were replaced, and the stadium now has 23,750 seats.
FC Utrecht vanuit het Hart
FC Utrecht is een betaaldvoetbalorganisatie die is gevestigd in het hart van het land. Het iconische Stadion Galgenwaard is de thuisbasis van de club die in 1970 ontstond uit een fusie tussen DOS, Elinkwijk en Velox. In het seizoen 2017/2018 stelde de club, in samenspraak met al haar stakeholders, een zogeheten Manifest op. In dat document is vastgelegd waar FC Utrecht voor staat. Het vormt nog altijd de leidraad voor het doen en laten van de FC. Vanuit het hart!
Een stadion met een verhaal
Stadion Galgenwaard. Een begrip in het Nederlandse voetbal. Een naam die klinkt als een klok, ver buiten de Utrechtse stadsgrenzen. ‘De Galg’: geliefd bij Utrechters, gevreesd door tegenstanders. Zij weten: daar, aan het Herculesplein, daar kan het spoken. Daar krijgen we geen grasspriet cadeau; nooit!
